WHAT CAUSES SUN DAMAGE
Sun Damage is caused when ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun or tanning beds penetrates skin not protected by sunscreen.
Because the damage from the sun affects the deepest layers of the skin (the dermis), it causes DNA changes at a cellular level and permanently alters the skin’s structure.
There are two kinds of UV light, UVA and UVB.
UVA light is the form of solar radiation that damages skin all the way from the outer layer, the epidermis, to the deepest layer, the dermis. Collagen, elastin fibers, epidermal cells and capillaries are all damaged by UVA light and affect the skin’s youthful appearance.
UVB solar radiation affects the outer layer of the skin and damages the DNA in the epidermis even more severely than UVA rays. UVB light can cause photoaging and precancerous cells to form.
