Scarring
What Causes Scarring
Scars are caused when damage to the deeper layer of the skin, the dermis, is repaired through the body’s healing process. When injuries (including burns, inflammation, acne, and surgery) affect the dermis, the skin repairs itself by growing new tissue, primarily made of collagen. There are several types of scars including:
Keloid: Most common among people with darker skin tones, keloid scars are thick, raised scars that can take on a colored or even shiny appearance. Keloids may extend beyond the original injury and restrict movement.
Contracture: Commonly caused by burns, contracture scars tighten skin and can even affect muscles and nerves as they commonly go deep into the skin.
Hypertrophic: Also raised and thick, hypertrophic scars are similar in appearance to keloid scars, but do not go beyond the borders of the original injury.
Acne: ranging from ice pick/pits to rolling scars that are more wavelike in appearance, acne scars are the result of the body’s healing process. A loss of tissue during the healing process will result in pits (ice pick) scars, or if too much collagen is produced during the healing process, you will have raised scars.
