Hair Loss
What Causes Hair Loss
Hair loss is caused by many factors, including genetics, aging, cancer treatment, illness, childbirth, stress, and improper hair care.
Genetics: The most common form of hair loss is hereditary hair loss (medically known as androgenic alopecia), which affects both men and women. Many people inherit genes that trigger the shrinking of hair follicles and eventual cessation of hair growth.
Aging: Growth of hair naturally slows as we age, just as hair color fades as we age.
Cancer treatment: Chemotherapy and radiation treatment for cancer causes many people to lose their hair within weeks of the commencement of treatment.
Illness, Childbirth, and Stress: Hair shedding commonly occurs after serious illness, childbirth, and periods of stress.
Hair care. Damage to the hair from chemical treatments, such as color, can lead to hair loss. Once a hair follicle is damaged, hair will no longer grow from that follicle.
