Elasticity
When we’re young, our skin is highly elastic. Elasticity is our skin’s capacity to stretch and bounce back into place, plumping the skin and affording it a healthy looking fullness. Two different proteins found in the layers of the skin—collagen and elastin—are the building blocks of elasticity. Collagen, also found in the muscles, tendons, and ligaments, keeps the skin firm by holding the layers of the skin together. Elastin, present in many connective tissues, helps the skin bounce back when pinched or pulled.
What Causes Elasticity
Our skin gradually and naturally becomes less elastic as we age. Collagen stores gradually diminish over time, and as a result, the layers of the skin begin to separate. Wrinkles form, and a combination of gravity and decreased levels of fat cells and hyaluronic acid make the skin sag.
Beyond aging, there are many other factors that contribute to the loss of skin elasticity. The sun’s ultraviolet rays damage collagen and elastin, accelerating sagging and the formation of wrinkles. Smoking and exposure to pollution damage the layers of the skin, which amplifies the aging process. Neglectful skincare habits (such as not washing your face every night!) can also affect the skin’s elasticity over time.
